WHAT WE AIM FOR

Our commitment

A lot of the people who need this website are older, tired, worried, reading on a phone in a hospital corridor, or using a screen reader. That is exactly who we built it for, so accessibility is not an afterthought.

We aim to meet WCAG 2.2 level AA. We are not claiming that every page passes every criterion — we have not yet had an independent audit, and we would rather tell you that honestly than print a badge we cannot stand behind. What we can tell you is what we have deliberately done, what we know is not perfect yet, and what we will do if you cannot use something.

Things we have done on purpose

  • Body text at 17px or larger, with generous line spacing, and never a fixed pixel height that clips text when you zoom
  • Colour combinations chosen for contrast — navy and dark ink on white or very pale blue, not grey on grey
  • The site works at 200% browser zoom and reflows to a single column on a phone
  • Content is written in short sentences and plain English, with headings that say what the section is actually about
  • Links describe where they go — no bare click here
  • Nothing auto-plays, nothing flashes, and nothing moves unless you ask it to
  • Forms and quizzes can be completed with a keyboard, and questions are asked one clear thing at a time
  • We never rely on colour alone to tell you something important
If you cannot use part of this siteDo not struggle with it. Email [email protected] or ring 01323 401352 and tell us what you were trying to do. We will give you the same information another way — including reading a guide to you over the phone if that is easiest.

We aim to reply within 5 working days.

What we know is not perfect yet

This is an honest list. We would rather publish it than pretend.

  • Some of our tools. The care fees calculator and the CHC checklist rely on interactive controls. They are keyboard-operable, but the results are presented visually and may not announce clearly on every screen reader. If you would like a result explained, ring us and we will walk through it with you
  • Embedded video. Webinar replays are hosted on third-party players whose controls we do not fully control. We caption our own recordings; older recordings may not yet be captioned
  • Downloadable guides. Our PDFs are tagged for structure, but some older ones are not fully accessible. A plain-text or large-print version of any guide is available on request, free of charge
  • Tables. A small number of comparison tables are wide, and on a narrow phone screen you may need to scroll them sideways
  • Third-party widgets. Our booking calendar and chat widget come from our website platform. We have configured them as accessibly as the platform allows, but we cannot change their underlying code

Formats we can provide instead

  • Large print (18pt or larger)
  • Plain text by email, with no images or styling
  • A telephone walk-through of any guide, checklist or result
  • A guidance call by telephone rather than video, or with extra time
  • Where you need an interpreter or a supporter present, tell us and we will make room for it
TECHNICAL AND LEGAL

Compliance status

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.2 AA standard, because of the exceptions listed above. We test as we build, using keyboard-only navigation, browser zoom, automated checks and a screen reader on the pages families use most — the home page, the funding guides, the contact and booking pages.

As a private business we are not covered by the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) Accessibility Regulations 2018. We are, however, covered by the Equality Act 2010, which requires us to make reasonable adjustments so that disabled people are not put at a substantial disadvantage. We take that duty seriously and we would rather adjust than argue.

Reporting a problem

Tell us and we will fix it or find you another way round it. If you are not satisfied with how we respond, you can contact the Equality Advisory and Support Service (EASS) on 0808 800 0082, which gives free advice on the Equality Act.

Preparation of this statementThis statement was prepared in February 2026 and reflects our own internal testing rather than an independent audit. We review it at least once a year, and whenever we change the site significantly.

Planned improvements
  • An independent accessibility audit of the ten most-visited pages
  • Captions and transcripts for every webinar replay
  • Accessible re-issue of the older downloadable guides
  • A screen-reader-friendly text summary alongside every calculator result
