Respite and short stays: a fortnight that keeps the carer going, or a trial that tells you the truth about a home

Respite is a short stay in a care home, or extra care at home, so a family carer can rest, recover or go on holiday. Used well it prevents the breakdown that ends home care altogether. It is also the best possible trial of a care home before any permanent decision – if you know what to watch for.

Three kinds of respite, and what each is for

A planned fortnight in a home

For the carer’s rest. Choose it as carefully as a permanent placement – it is the same staff, the same food, the same night.

Extra care at home

Sitting services, day centres, a live-in carer for two weeks. Keeps the person in familiar surroundings; costs less than a bed.

A trial stay

Two to four weeks in the home you are considering. Visit at three times of day, ask for the notes, and read the daily records before deciding.

What the trial tells youWeight, mood, sleep, continence, whether the call bell is answered, whether anyone learned their name. Ask for the care notes at the end – they are the person’s records – and read them before the permanent contract is offered.
