URGENT · THE CARER CAN’T CARRY ON

The carer can’t carry on. That is a care need, and it changes what the council must do.

A husband who has stopped sleeping, a daughter who has used every day of leave, a neighbour who has quietly been doing everything. When the carer breaks, the person they care for becomes an urgent case whether or not anyone has said so. Here is what you can ask for today, and what we can do this week.

Carers have their own assessmentThe Care Act gives every carer the right to a carer’s assessment – and support in their own right.
Respite is a service, not a favourEmergency respite exists. Ask for it by name.
Nobody has to sign anything todayA crisis placement can be temporary. Do not sign a permanent contract while exhausted.
TODAY

Three phone calls, in this order

1

Adult social care – “urgent”

Say the carer can no longer provide care and the person is at risk. Ask for an urgent needs assessment and a carer’s assessment, and note the time and name.

2

The GP

If the carer is unwell, they need to be seen. If the person cared for has changed suddenly, so do they – infection and medication are the usual culprits.

3

Us, if you want a nurse in the loop

Twenty minutes free. We tell you what to ask for, what to refuse, and whether a respite place, a care package or a placement is the right week-one answer.

Ring 999 or 111 first ifsomeone has fallen and cannot get up, is confused in a way that is new, has not eaten or drunk for a day, or is at immediate risk. This page is for what happens after that.

What this is not

  • Not a substitute for the council’s duty to assess and to meet urgent need.
  • Not care provision – we do not send carers; we get the right ones sent.
  • Not the place for a safeguarding concern: contact the adult safeguarding team, then us.
